How to make NY resolutions that ACTUALLY stick (Health & Fitness Edition)

As the calendar flips to a new year, many of us are filled with the motivation to make positive changes in our lives. It's the season of resolutions, and if you're aiming to prioritise your health and fitness, you're on the right track. The key is not just setting resolutions, but setting ones that stick. We have put together a guide to making health and fitness resolutions that will endure beyond January so you can make 2024 your best year yet!

1. Set Realistic Goals:

Begin with achievable objectives. It's great to aim high, but setting realistic goals ensures you don't set yourself up for disappointment. Instead of a vague goal like "get fit," try something specific like "walk 10,000 steps a day" or "cook a healthy dinner at least three times a week." These specific goals give you a clear path to success.

2. Start Small:

Big changes often come from small, consistent efforts. If your ultimate goal is to run a marathon, start by incorporating short runs into your routine. Gradual progress is not only more sustainable but also helps your body adapt to the changes, reducing the risk of burnout or injury.

3. Focus on Habits:

Resolutions are more likely to stick if they become ingrained habits. Identify the daily or weekly habits that will contribute to your health and fitness goals. Whether it's drinking more water, getting enough sleep, or scheduling regular workouts, habits create a foundation for lasting change.

4. Find MOVEMENT THAT YOU ENJOY:

If you dread your workout, you're less likely to stick to it. Lucky we know that we make your PT sessions far more enjoyable, but if you are exercising outside of our sessions, make sure you explore different activities like hiking, swimming, or even a group fitness class (lucky we know a great studio that runs great classes!) When exercise is fun and enjoyable, it becomes a sustainable part of your routine.

5. Accountability Matters:

Share your goals with a friend or family member who can provide support and encouragement. Better yet, find a personal trainer that you can train with and hold you accountable! When you have a session booked in, you are so much more likely to show up and get the work done. Having someone to share the ups and downs with makes the process more enjoyable and increases the likelihood of staying on track!

6. Track Your Progress:

Keep a journal, take pictures and make sure your trainer is tracking your progress. Celebrate small victories and learn from setbacks. Monitoring your achievements, whether it's weight loss, increased stamina, or improved sleep, provides motivation and reinforces the positive changes you're making.

7. Prioritise Rest and Recovery:

Don't underestimate the importance of rest. Overtraining can lead to burnout and injuries. Schedule rest days into your fitness routine and listen to your body. Adequate sleep and recovery are crucial components of a sustainable health and fitness plan.

8. Adapt and Adjust:

Life is unpredictable, and obstacles will inevitably arise. Instead of abandoning your resolutions at the first sign of a challenge, be flexible and willing to adapt. If your initial plan isn't working, adjust your approach rather than giving up.

9. Celebrate the Journey:

Remember that the journey to a healthier you is just as important as the destination. Celebrate the positive changes you're making along the way, and don't be too hard on yourself if you encounter setbacks. Every step forward is a victory.
